What is the Difference Between Hospice and Palliative Care?
While palliative care is available to patients while they are still being treated for a serious health issue, hospice focuses on comfort care during the final stages of terminal illness.
What Type of Conditions Can Hospice and Palliative Care Providers Help With?
Serious illnesses hospice and palliative care providers can help with include heart disease, cancer, lung disease, renal failure, aspiration pneumonia and more. These providers include doctors, nurse practitioners, nursing aides, social workers, chaplains and trained volunteers who offer physical, emotional and spiritual support to help you or your loved one feel better while facing a serious illness.
What is it Like to Receive Hospice and Palliative Care?
A doctor or nurse practitioner usually comes to your home to discuss your health goals — from keeping pain to a minimum to assisting with mobility and safety. These providers work alongside your family doctor and help to coordinate your health care so you can help you live life more fully.
If you are receiving palliative medicine services you may receive care from Nurse Practitioner Tisha Fisher, FNP-C. If you are a hospice patient, a health care team will be assigned to assist you and your loved ones.
The costs of palliative care are often covered by Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurances, charities and payment plans. Most hospice patients use their Medicare Hospice Benefit, which covers all costs associated with their care including hospital beds, walkers, wheelchairs and more.
